2025 Jubilee Pilgrimage to Baltimore
On June 21, 2025, parishioners and friends of St. John the Baptist, Bridgeport, PA made a pilgrimage from the Philadelphia area to Baltimore: America's first diocese. Our sister parish in the Ordinariate--Mount Calvary Church--was designated by Bishop Lopes as a pilgrimage site for the Jubilee Year of 2025. Among those who joined us for this grace-filled day were Fr. David Ousley (founding Pastor of St.. John the Baptist, now retired), Fr. Armando Alejandro, Jr. (Administrator, St. Timothy's Ordinariate Church, Sykesville, MD), and Michael Ullrich (seminarian on summer assignment at St. Luke's, Oxon Hill, MD).
Most pilgrims from St. John's arrived by bus. They were ceremonially greeted at the door by Fr. Albert Scharbach (Pastor of Mount Calvary) and sprinkled with holy water as Psalm 24 was sung. All then entered the church in solemnly in procession. Fr. Scharbach led the people in the Lord's Prayer and other prescribed prayers for the intentions of the Pope, fulfilling the Jubilee plenary indulgence.
After a brief welcome, three of our priests heard confessions while Fr. Keyes solemnly officiated the hour of Mattins (Morning Prayer according to the Ordinariate's Daily Office), with music adapted from the St. Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter.
Events at Mount Calvary culminated with the celebration of a solemn Mass for Pilgrims. Fr. Keyes celebrated the Mass and Fr. Ousley preached the homily. Singers from the Mount Calvary Choir, under the direction of Tom Hetrick, enhanced the beauty of our worship by singing William Byrd's "Mass for Four Voices", as well as other anthems from the Tudor era of English sacred music (Christopher Tye's "I will exalt thee" and John Sheppard's "Haste thee, O God"). They were supported by singers from the Choir of the nearby Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori, under the direction of Troy Lawson, for the Propers of the Mass in Gregorian chant.
After Mass, the pilgrims had lunch in the church's undercroft and listened to a presentation by James Griffin on church architecture and the history of the American Catholic Church's origins in Baltimore.
The last stop on the pilgrimage was to the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, where we chanted the hour of Vespers in the Lady Chapel to conclude the day.
The music provided for this event was sponsored by The Durandus Institute for Sacred Liturgy & Music.
