Become Catholic at SJB

Unbaptized adults normally become catechumens and enter the Church through the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) at the Easter Vigil. Those who have no experience of the Christian faith, and would like to learn more, should contact the pastor. Currently a regular Catechism class is held on the first Wednesday night of the month at 7 pm in the meeting room. This class is both for new members, baptismal candidates, and any who would like to enrich their faith. There is no need to register: just show up! The full process of sacramental initiation takes about a year, though adaptations can be made based on the prior preparation of the individual.

Adult Christians who have already been validly baptized in another ecclesial community (aka Protestants) are not "converts," properly-so-called. To enter the Catholic Church, they receive the sacrament of Confirmation in the Rite of Reception into Full Communion, having first gone to Confession. This can happen any time at the discretion of the pastor, though Pentecost is particularly suitable.

Children under the age of 7 can either be baptized after their parents become Catholic or, if they are already been validly baptized, they can be received into Full Communion with the parents. The details of this process are discussed along with other matters in the process of preparation. Children who are 7 year old and up are treated as adults by canon law and will need to consent to their own sacraments alongside their parents.
